Supplements For Healthy Brain Function

We are born with more brain cells than we will ever have again in our lives. As we age, we lose brain cells, and as far as science can tell at this time, our bodies cannot regenerate the neurons in the brain. To preserve health and brain function, it is essential that we protect, nourish and exercise our brains. This is the topic of discussion for my Healthy Brain series.

Although our brains are unable to regenerate dead neurons, scientists have discovered that the brain has an amazing way of overcoming this downfall in order to preserve memory and brain function. This process is called neurotropism. When a neuron (brain cell) dies, there's a gap left between the cells on either side of the dead cell. Nerve transmissions usually travel from one neuron to the other much like electricity does. The healthy neurons surrounding the dead space where the cell once was will reach out with their extensions (dendrites) and stretch across that dead space to create new connections with surrounding neurons. This phenomenon maintains the function of the brains cells so that messages are able to travel across those divides without disruption. You can see some cells in neurotropism in the video below.

This week I've dedicated my blogging to the health practice of juicing vegetables for optimal health. If you've missed Part 1, Part 2 or Part 3 of Tips For Juicing For Optimal Health, I suggest you back up and read those first.

By now I hope you're convinced you want to try juicing and you're pretty comfortable with knowing what you need to make a delicious, nutritious high quality juice. I only have a couple tips left and mostly want to help you with choosing the right equipment. If you've ever shopped for a juicer, I'm sure you know that the options are endless as are the price differences. Hopefully I can make the process of selecting the right juicer a little less daunting. But first I want to discuss something that always comes up when we discuss juicing vegetables.

I hope by now you are realizing the many health benefits of drinking nutritious fresh raw juice. I hope you've either dusted off your old juicer or are considering buying one to boost your nutrition. If you don't have a juicer yet, I will discuss choosing the best juicer in Part 4 of Tips For Juicing For Optimal Health. If you missed Part 2 or Part 1 of the series, please go back and read those first.

Juicing does not cancel out a bad diet. It is important to build a diet around whole foods that are clean (organic), unadulterated (non-GMO) and fresh! Juicing organic vegetables is a way to augment that diet and be able to incorporate even more healthy nutritious disease preventative nutrients found in our rainbow of vegetables. Here I'm presenting a few more tips to make your juicing experience most palatable and beneficial.

Are Toxins Making You Fat?

It's no secret that our environment is toxic. Nuclear waste, chemical pesticides, oil spills and acid rain are hardly "news", but more like "olds." Toxins are everywhere. It is estimated that almost 80 billion pounds of toxins are released into the environment every year.

The Environmental Working Group, a consumer watchdog organization, has published several studies documenting the presence of toxins in the bodies of seemingly healthy families, even newborn babies, all over America.  These toxins end up in our water, ground, food and eventually into our tissues and cells. We are a toxic society.

Choosing The Best Liver Detox Program

I have many friends who have done the Master Cleanse as part of a routine liver cleansing program.  I know many that have had good results as well.  However, I find that this cleansing program, which is basically a fast, is often abused and not used as intended.

The Master Cleanse is a fast that uses a drink made from lemon juice, maple syrup, cayenne pepper and filtered water as a replacement for food.  It is to be carried on for 3 or more days. Some have gone as long as a month or more.  The intention is to give the body a break from food so that the liver can use more energy to detoxify the body of unhealthy toxins.
